Apprenticeship Program

Local 110’s JATC
Our apprenticeship consists of a five-year program registered with the Virginia Department of Labor. It includes a minimum of 168 hours annually of related classroom instruction, in addition to the minimum of 10,000 hours of on the job training provided by the employing contractor over the five year apprenticeship. Apprentices normally work a full day and attend related training two nights per week at the training center.
The related training subjects include science, math, drawing interpretation and plan reading, building codes, and applicable shop labs. In their third year the apprentices may elect to specialize in one of the following career paths: Pipefitting, Plumbing, Mechanical Equipment Service (HVAC) & Pipe Welding
In addition to the technical instruction apprentices receive training in several areas including: OSHA 30, Medical Gas, Medical Gas Installer’s Certificate, Rigging & Signal Persons Certificate & First Aid including CPR certification.

Apprenticeship FAQs
What is Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeship is occupational training that combines on-the-job experience with classroom instruction. Apprentices earn while they learn– their wages usually begin at 50% of the journeyman salary. Journeymen are individuals who have completed their training and hold industry certification.
Apprentices receive pay increases as they learn to perform more complex tasks. When they become a journeyman, they increase their chances of finding a well-paying job in the industry and may become supervisors or go into business for themselves.

How Does This Program Work?
This is a five year work-study program. To graduate you must have completed 10,000 hours working in the field for one of our signatory contractors as well as 1,000 hours of classroom/hands on schooling at our training facility. Upon completion of the program you will ‘top-out’ with a VA state Journeyman’s license.
Where And When Can I Apply?
We accept applications from January 2nd-May 31st of each year, during regular business hours. You must come to our Training Facility located at 1013 Ruritan Blvd., Chesapeake, VA. with your completed application in hand, along with your driver’s license, birth certificate and high school diploma/GED. This application can be found under ‘Training’ and ‘Application.’ You can apply in person as well.
What Do I Need To Apply? Are There Any Requirements?
You must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or its equivalent and possess a valid driver’s license. You are required to bring both of the previously mentioned documents with you for application, along with your birth certificate. There are no exceptions to this rule.
What Is The Application Process? How Do You Select Apprentices?
This is a three step process.
- Bring in necessary documentation & complete application.
- Math evaluation.
- Interview.
Following step 1 and the deadline of May 31st, you will be notified as to the dates and times for both steps 2 and 3. Acceptance/non-acceptance notifications will be sent following the interview.
Does UA Local 110 Provide Job Placement When I Get In?
While we do not guarantee job placement, as we can not predict manpower needs, we will do our absolute best to place you with one of our signatory contractors upon acceptance and the start of the program in September.
